Does Shopify keep a version history of your product content?
Short answer: no. Shopify versions your theme, not your words. If someone overwrites a product description, the previous wording is not stored anywhere you can reach from the admin: there is no undo, and no screen that shows what the field said yesterday.
This page explains exactly what is kept, what is not, and what you can do about it.
What Shopify does keep
- Theme code. Themes have a version history in the theme library: you can look at an earlier version and roll back to it.
- Order timelines. Every order carries a timeline of what happened to it, and who did what.
- The fact that a product changed. Depending on your plan, the admin records that a staff member edited a product, and when. It never records what the field contained before the edit.
What Shopify does not keep
None of your catalogue copy is versioned:
- product and collection titles, descriptions and handles;
- SEO title and SEO description;
- tags and metafields;
- every translation of all of the above.
Save an edit and the previous value is gone. A CSV export is not a substitute: it is a snapshot, and it only helps if you happened to export the file before the change, which, by definition, you never do before the change you did not expect.
There is also no way, inside Shopify, to look at a proposed change next to what is currently live. Whoever has edit rights sees one field, types over it, and publishes.
Why this bites harder now
Product copy used to change a few times a year. It now changes whenever someone runs a bulk SEO pass, imports a spreadsheet, or points an AI agent at the catalogue. The volume went up, the number of people who can trigger a change went up, and the cost of a bad change went up with it: a rewritten description is a ranking you had, and no longer have.
The missing piece is not more automation. It is the ability to see what is about to change, decide, and go back.
What Vetta adds
| Shopify alone | With Vetta | |
|---|---|---|
| History of a description | none | every version, kept |
| Undo a bad edit | no | restore any earlier version |
| See a change before it goes live | no | field-by-field diff, per locale |
| Approve before publishing | no | approval gate, with roles |
| Edits made directly in Shopify | untracked | captured as versions |
| AI agents writing content | full write access | propose only, never publish |
Vetta sits between the draft and the storefront. It keeps a version of every field each time something changes, including changes made straight in the Shopify admin, outside the app, and it will not publish anything until a reviewer approves it.

Common questions
Can I undo a product edit in Shopify? Not after saving. The admin has no undo for catalogue content, and support cannot restore a previous description for you.
Do product exports count as a backup? Only for the state at the moment of the export. They tell you nothing about what changed in between, and restoring one overwrites everything else that moved since.
Does Vetta replace the Shopify admin? No. Your team keeps working where it works today; Vetta adds the review step and the history that the admin does not have.
